Here’s a conversation we’ve had more times than we can count. A parent walks in asking about “UILS coaching,” and when we ask which exam they’re preparing for, they say CLAT. That’s the wrong exam for UILS, and it’s a mix-up worth clearing up properly.

UILS, the University Institute of Legal Studies, is Panjab University’s law school in Chandigarh, along with its regional centres in Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur. Its roots trace back to 1889 in Lahore, re-established in Shimla in 1948 before finally settling in Chandigarh in 1959. It’s one of the oldest law departments in North India, and it doesn’t admit students through CLAT. Admission runs through Panjab University’s own entrance exam, PU CET Law, for the 5-year integrated programmes, and a separate PU LLB Entrance Test for the 3-year programme after graduation.

So Why the Confusion?

Partly it’s just how CLAT dominates the national conversation around law entrance exams. Most YouTube videos, most coaching ads, most general “how to get into law school” content online is built around CLAT and the National Law Universities. UILS doesn’t get the same visibility even though it’s arguably one of the strongest public law schools in this part of the country, with a documented history of alumni sitting on the High Court bench and a Legal Aid Clinic run in direct partnership with the Punjab State Legal Services Authority. We’ve gone into that history in more detail in why choose Panjab University for law, if you want the fuller picture.

So a student sees “law entrance exam,” assumes CLAT, and starts preparing for the wrong test entirely. By the time someone corrects them, months of preparation time built around the wrong pattern have gone by.

What Actually Gets You Into UILS

For the 5-year BA LLB (Hons.) or B.Com LLB (Hons.) straight out of Class 12, it’s PU CET Law, currently 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, offline OMR mode, testing Legal Aptitude, General Knowledge, Reasoning and English, with a quarter mark deducted per wrong answer. No prior legal background needed. Eligibility sits at 45% aggregate in 10+2 for general category, 40% for SC/ST/BC/PwD, and there’s no upper age limit anymore since the Bar Council of India removed it for both the 3-year and 5-year routes.

For the 3-year LLB after an existing bachelor’s degree, it’s a separate PU LLB Entrance Test, also merit-based and offline.

Neither of these is CLAT. They share some DNA, legal aptitude and reasoning show up in both, but the format, the pacing, and honestly the whole feel of sitting the exam is different enough that CLAT-only preparation leaves gaps a UILS aspirant can’t afford.

What Coaching for UILS Should Actually Cover

A genuine UILS-focused programme trains for PU CET Law specifically, not a repurposed CLAT batch. That means practice sets in the real 100-question, 90-minute format, mock tests scored with the actual negative marking so a student learns what guessing costs them, and enough current affairs and reasoning practice to move quickly without slowing down to overthink. If CLAT is also on your radar, it’s worth reading how the two exams actually compare in our CLAT coaching guide.

It also means someone actually explaining UILS itself, the two entry routes, the regional centres in Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur, and why a lot of families in this region choose it over uprooting to a metro city for a National Law University. That context matters when a 17-year-old is trying to decide where to put a year of serious preparation effort.

Where Edvantage Fits

At our centre in Sector 22 B, Chandigarh, we treat UILS admission prep as its own track built around PU CET Law’s actual format, not a side note in a bigger CLAT programme. If you’re not sure yet whether you’re aiming for UILS, another NLU through CLAT, or honestly both, that’s a completely normal place to be at this stage, and it’s worth a real conversation before you commit a year of preparation to the wrong exam.

Exam patterns and eligibility criteria are reviewed by Panjab University each year, so always check the latest notification on the official UILS admission portal before finalizing your plan.
